AUSTIN HEALEY - 1966 Austin Healey 3000 Mark III Phase 2

AUSTIN HEALEY - 1966 Austin Healey 3000 Mark III Phase 2

1966 Austin Healey 3000 Mark III Phase 2

The Austin Healey 3000 best known as the Big Healey is a British sports car in the truest sense. Built from 1959 to 1967. The cars bodywork was made off site by Jensen motors in period and the vehicles were assembled at BMCs Abingdon Works alongside the production of MG models. During its production life, and of course with a DNA routed in the 100/6, the car transitioned from an open sports car, albeit with a child supporting 2+2 option, to a sports convertible. In 1963 more than 91% of all Healey 3000 cars were exported, mostly to North America. The 3 litre 3000 Healey was a car hugely successful in motorsport; regularly winning its class in European Rallies. It was a car well supported by the Abingdon competitions department and is, of course, a car today regularly seen being very successful in historic motor sport. The 3000 sports convertible Mark III was announced in February 1964. Power increased from 136hp to 150hp. This was largely due to a revised higher lift camshaft and the installation of revised HD8 carburettors which replaced the HS6 used on former models. Power assisted brakes became standard and the cars dashboard displayed both the speedometer and rev counter directly in front of the driver. The Mark III BJ8 remained in production until the end of 1967 with only one further car being built in 1968. In May 1964, the phase 2 version of the Mark III Healey was released. This gained ground clearance through a modified rear chassis and in 1965 the car received separate indicator lights. The dashboard featured a wood veneer and with revised power, the car was propelled to 60 mph in under 10 seconds with top speed in excess of 120 mph.
The car offered for Sale today, being in private ownership for the last 33 years, is the desirable Austin Healey 3000 Mark III phase 2. This car was the subject of a ground up restoration in 1990 with a bare chassis and mechanical rebuild which is clearly but one reason why the car is in such excellent and sound condition today. This is an exceptional and original matching numbers RHD car supplied with heritage certificate, handbook and manuals and less than 80,000 verified miles recorded to date. The car is presently in our workshops and is offered for sale following a light restoration. This includes engine out detailing, core plugs have been replaced, hoses renewed, gaskets and seals either checked or replaced, a complete overhaul to the distributor, a new clutch, full over haul of the cooling system and a full decoke with head removed. In parallel the complete drive train and suspension have been rebuilt, the underside of the car repainted and treated with Wax oil, so that this car will present as one of the very best for sale. The original hood frame is to be repainted and refitted with a replacement mohair hood and in parallel the electrical system has been fully checked, with any wiring showing signs of time correctly made good. Paintwork and bright work on the car are excellent. The car sits with recent new tyres and lovely wire wheels. Presented in British Racing Green, the car is of course iconic from an era of Big Healey’s and this is certainly and example to be cherished by a new owner for many years to come.
Cars such as this with spare keys, original green log books, original drivers handbook, multiple tax discs from those days when this was required and a history file which includes MOTs going back to 1976 are indeed rare and of course original RHD cars are rarer still. So many have found their way from the UK to the US.
The car will be supplied to the new owner with current UK V5 and fresh 12 x months MOT and will go for a final tune and check up at a rolling road facility so as to be optimised for driving pleasure.
