    TRIUMPH - 1962 Triumph TR4 – Restored to Works Rally Car Specification


    The Triumph TR4 was built in the United Kingdom by the Standard Triumph Motor Company. The car was based on the chassis and drivetrain of the TR3A with modifications taken from the TR3A’s rack and pinion steering. This helped enormously in preparation for Le Mans.

    Code named ‘Zest’ during its development, the TR4 was officially introduced in 1961.

    The TR4 was one of the most successful Triumphs from the 60‘s continuing the rugged image of the Marque, but aesthetically pleasing with a wonderfully modern Michelotti styled body.


    The car offered for sale is a matching numbers car, having had a complete body-off restoration.

    Uniquely this car has the original hardtop which consisted of a fixed glass Window. A feature which is quite rare for TR4s in this day and age.


    This tuned TR4 reaches 50mph in 7 seconds and is definitely a quick 60’s car!

    Rebuilt with Works Gussets for chassis strengthening, vented Works style front wings, fully sorted suspension (with Koni dampers up front), a Works bonnet vent and of course, period correct Minilite wheels. If rebuilt today the car would cost much more than the asking price.

    The drivetrain is equally impressive, rebuilt in 2005, to include a Pro Logic competition overdrive, the engine lightened and balanced with a gas flowed cylinder head and fast-road camshaft. Breathing on a competition manifold and bespoke stainless exhaust make this is a fabulous driver’s car.

    The interior has a wonderful patina, with period correct bucket seats and harnesses. The Cockpit is so wonderfully typical of 60’s competition cars.


    With the original buff log book, clearly showing first UK registration as June 1962 this is a beautifully restored ‘timewarp’ car. Many desirable reliability and performance enhancing modifications have been done, as per the Works cars in period. With uprated cooling from the 2500 PI and the fitting of a Kenlow system with manual override, this is a car as happy on alpine passes in the height of summer, or Britains country roads on a winters day!

    Of course this TR4 is also idyllic for a number of classic car events, hillclimbs and in particular historic motorsport.


    The history file is very thorough with very early MOTs evident and all importantly a photo record of the body off restoration that has been meticulously finished here in Suffolk, with invoices included.

    This is a classic ready to be enjoyed.  Eligibility for a host of events is assured, with this being a distinctive car very able to go head to head with the 6 cylinder Healeys from its period and a car with handling considerably better than its year would suggest!


    This is without doubt a fast appreciating classic, immediately ready for this year’s events ,with aluminium works hardtop plus a super hood and weather gear. This is a car to be enjoyed this summer whether its driving to Classic Le Mans or perhaps competing in any number of Historic Motorsport events.

    Should a new owner wish to further improve the performance of the car, twin Weber installation and set up is available by separate negotiation. This would potentially add a further 30 BHP+ to the already impressive power output from this engine.
