1959 MGA Roadster
The MGA is regarded as one of the prettiest MG’s to come out of Abingdon in the post-war era.
The MGA replaced the MGTF 1500 Midget & represented a complete styling break from earlier MG sports cars.
The MGA was produced from 1955 to 1962. As a new engine was available for the start of production, the MGA did not have the XPAG unit but was fitted with the BMC unit, this allowed a lower bonnet line.
The MGA had no exterior door handles, these were only fitted to the Coupe.
The MGA was built with rack & pinion steering, suspension with independent coil springs & wishbones, at the front with a rigid axle at the rear with semi- elliptic springs at the rear.
In May 1959 standard cars received an updated engine, now 1588 cc, with disc brakes fitted at the front of the car .
This car was tested by “Motor” magazine in 1959; a top speed of 96.1 mph with a 0-60 time of 13.3 seconds was considered a good performance for a sports car at this time. In 1959 the car, tested, cost £940.00!
The World recognised the MGA – as a “jolly good little Sports car”. Competition success, with the model raced in the US & famously driven in the Mille Miglia to name but some, have only strengthened the enthusiasm for an MGA today.
